Drawn Hunt applications open for 2024-25 season
Hunters will have new opportunities and scenery this fall through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) drawn hunt permits program. The program, which issues permits for drawn hunts on both public and private lands throughout Texas, is now accepting applications for a shot at nearly 9,400 permits in more than 60 high-quality hunt categories.

Pest expert predicts 'bug boom' this summer
Following the recent heatwave, meteorologists across the board are warning of extreme weather in the summer of 2024 across most of the continental USA. While natural events such as heatwaves, storms, floods, and tornadoes are some of the more devastating impacts of extreme weather, an often-overlooked consequence is the increase in bug activity. Although bugs generally don’t cause the same devastating impacts as extreme weather events, they can become a severe annoyance, and getting rid of them can become quite costly for homeowners.

County spared effects of Beryl
As of press time, the bands of Hurricane Beryl are barely brushing through DeWitt County. The western side of the storm is seeing little rainfall, but this was not known over the weekend as county leaders made decisions about public meetings.

Exotic animals visit kiddos at library
Dylan McDaniel has been working with animals all his life and doing shows with them for five years. On July 3rd, McDaniel from Wild Things Zoofari brought six of his animals to show at the Yorktown Public Library.

Local home health service helps patients heal, avoid hospital
When the regional hospital shut down its home health services, a Cuero physical therapist and business owner bridged that healthcare gap when he purchased Cuero Home Health. “I wanted people to be able to continue to have those services here locally and find a way to make that happen,” Jay Babcock said.

Out with old, in with new
While the city is turning junk into bucks with its new GovDeals account, its purchase of a Kubota excavator will pay dividends in proper repairs for years to come, according to Mayor Bill Baker. Throughout the regular meeting of the Yorktown City Council on June 24, references were made to the ways a new excavator will benefit the city.

Doris Marie White
Doris Marie White, 93, of Cuero passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024. She was born October 20, 1930, in Cuero to the late Ned Givens Thigpen and Viola Vienna Simon Thigpen. She married the love of her life, Odell White Sr. on February 19, 1950, in Cuero. Doris was a wonderful wife and mother who raised five children. She enjoyed gardening which showed through her beautiful flower beds and bountiful vegetable garden. She enjoyed cooking and baking and always had enough for family and friends. She also had a passion for sewing, making beautiful quilts and learned the tedious needle point called Brazilian embroidery. She loved reading and made weekly trips to the Cuero Library, but her most favorite book was her Bible.
