Family loses home in fire
A tragic fire broke out at 834 Metting School Rd. in Yorktown on March 24, resulting in the complete loss of the home. Manpower was limited, despite the response from multiple agencies. The Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Nordheim Fire Department (FD), Cuero FD, Cuero VFD, and Westhoff FD all contributed to the ef- forts, along with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office. Crews from Commissioners Ryan Varela’s Precinct 1 and James Kaiser’s Precinct 3, along with Yorktown and Cuero EMS, were also on site.

Cuero alumni elected to honor society
BATON ROUGE Jeanette Yusko of Cuero, Texas, was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at University of Houston-Victoria. Yusko is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Three talented student writers, remarkable area women and women important in Texas history were honored on March 9 at the Casino Hall in La Grange. Sheep, goat prices rise as supply tightens
Texas sheep and goat producers are benefiting from strong market conditions in early 2025 with seasonal supply trends supporting elevated prices. Current market conditions are in line with expected seasonal patterns, with a tighter supply leading to higher prices, said Jake Thorne, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service sheep and goat program specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Animal Science, San Angelo.

The Kindness Project
Pet Adoptions of Cuero was the recipient of “The Kindness Project,” created by educators at John C. French Elementary to show the children the importance of helping out local nonpro_ts. Students were encouraged to donate any pet food or supplies, cleaning supplies, even used towels and linens to help the many needs of the pet shelter.
