Chamber doubles down on socials, scholarships
Annual banquet honors businesses, volunteers At the annual Yorktown Chamber of Commerce Banquet on March 28, community leaders gathered for a meal at the Community Hall, taking note of business anniversaries and awards as usual. But the “wow” of the night came with the announcement that this year’s scholarship fundraising had doubled.

Veteran receives Quilt of Valor
Veteran Bobby Schley, of DeWitt County, was honored with a quilt as a part of the Quilt of Valor Program at a livestock show in Canton, TX on Saturday, March 15. Schley, with his wife of 53 years, Bonnie, was presented with the quilt at the opening of the Metch Memorial Livestock Show.

County proclaims burn ban, facilitates emergency services
In addition to the highlights at the DeWitt County Commissioners Court regular meeting in March of the retirement of Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Peggy Mayer and the Child Abuse Awareness proclamation, a 90-day burn ban as well as a number of other decisions were taken.

Hill family home devastated by fire
Dr. David Hill and his wife, Janie, achieved their dream of living in the country many years ago when they settled in Cuero with their three children: Dana, Ryan, and Corey. But on March 23, around 11:30 p.m., Janie let the dogs out and spotted a fire. Soon, they were rushing into the night, fleeing their home barefoot and disoriented.

Cuero Livestock Market
Number of Head: 507 There were 111 cows and 10 bulls. The packer cow and bull market were once again steady with last week’s prices. With a shortened supply due to the wonderful rainfall, the calf market was outstanding once again this week. Some of the highs weren’t as high as last week but most of all the averages finished $5-$20 higher than last week on limited numbers.
