Pest expert predicts 'bug boom' this summer
Following the recent heatwave, meteorologists across the board are warning of extreme weather in the summer of 2024 across most of the continental USA. While natural events such as heatwaves, storms, floods, and tornadoes are some of the more devastating impacts of extreme weather, an often-overlooked consequence is the increase in bug activity. Although bugs generally don’t cause the same devastating impacts as extreme weather events, they can become a severe annoyance, and getting rid of them can become quite costly for homeowners.

Drawn Hunt applications open for 2024-25 season
Hunters will have new opportunities and scenery this fall through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) drawn hunt permits program. The program, which issues permits for drawn hunts on both public and private lands throughout Texas, is now accepting applications for a shot at nearly 9,400 permits in more than 60 high-quality hunt categories.

Program STEARs first responders to those who may need help
Homebound individuals are urged by DeWitt County’s Office of Emergency Manager Billy Jordan to sign up with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry, or STEAR, program also known as 211. Cory Smith with Cuero Home Health said her agency offers assistance to each client in signing up, and it takes less than 10 minutes.

Gobbler Football Season Tickets
The 2024 Gobbler Football Season Tickets ($60 – for 5 the home games) will be on sale at the Cuero ISD Administration Office located at 960 E Broadway beginning Monday, July 15 through Monday, August 19 for those individuals who had season tickets during the 2023 season. Cuero ISD will accept cash, checks and credit cards for season tickets purchases. These tickets will also be available at the Booster Club Meeting on Wednesday, August 7 and at the Athletic Kickoff Banquet on Monday, August 19 at the VFW Hall. Season tickets not purchased by last year’s season ticket holders will be available to the public beginning Wednesday, August 21. WE WILL ONLY BE SELLING TICKETS MONDAY - THURSDAY 8:00 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ON FRIDAY UNTIL AUGUST 2.

Families flock to Touch-a-Truck 2
Almost 200 more people attended the Second Annual Touch-a-Truck on Saturday than the first year’s attendance of 380. Event sponsor Friends of DeWitt County Children started the Toucha- Truck at the Cuero VFW as an activity for kids and families to do together when school is out and receive a free meal as well.

Proposed federal rule would help protect workers from extreme heat
A year after a new state law ended mandatory water breaks in Texas, a proposed federal rule would protect millions of workers from the risks caused by extreme heat, The Texas Tribune reported. The rule would require employers to create plans to prevent heat injuries and illnesses and ensure workers get access to drinking water, rest breaks and control of indoor heat.

This song written by Country Music Star Sarah Darling has to be one of the favorites for Christians. I know that it is one of mine and I love to hear it sung by Darling and Guy Penrod. It is truly inspirational and a real comfort to someone who has lost a loved one. It speaks about losing someone from this earthly life as we know it and going home to be with Jesus.

Ernest James “Pete” Parma
Ernest James “Pete” Parma, 84, of Cuero passed away Monday, June 24, 2024 after a short battle with cancer. He was born December 30, 1939 in Cuero to Benjamin “Ben” John Sr. and Emelia Zielonka Parma. He was a farmer and rancher his whole life. In his free time, he enjoyed roping, hunting and fishing.
