Tuesday, Oct 1 the Yorktown Kitty Kats defeated the Kenedy Leopards in a five set battle. Bringing Yorktown to 1-1 in district play and a 16-12 overall record.

New Murals in Walk Thru
Artist Rafael Acosta’s assistant fills in color on the latest mural at the Main Street Walk Thru. The Rialto movie theater was located where the current City Hall is. This mural as well as the one of the historic passenger train depot were “14 years in the making,” according to Main Street Director Sandra Osborne. Both new murals will greet visitors at the first Ruby Free Pancake Breakfast during Turkeyfest.

District 30 candidate answers questions
One of the down-ballot races on the Nov. 5 election includes the District 30 Texas House of Representatives office. Geannie Morrison held the office for 25 years, but chose not to run for re-election.

County issues burn ban
Due to increasingly dryer soil, the DeWitt County Commissioners issued a 90-day burn ban order at a special meeting on October 3. “Things have dried out significantly in the last six weeks, and there’s plenty of fuel around,” County Judge Daryl Fowler said.

New Republican headquarters opens
DeWitt County Republicans celebrated the opening of a new headquarters on Esplanade on Monday. The hours of operation will be posted on their DeWitt County Texas GOP Facebook page.

Dorothy Marie Fellers
Dorothy Marie Fellers, 94, of Cuero passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024. She was born August 13, 1930 in Shiner to Jim and Stacy Kurtz Fric. She married Ellis Fellers Sr. on August 24, 1972. Her long career as a Nurse’s Aide shows a deep commitment to helping those in need, while her love for sitting outside and animals reflects a warm, nurturing spirit.

Pancake practice makes perfect for new Turkeyfest event
Hello All, Busy month of September: the Council approved the Fiscal year 2025 City budget, and the first heat of the Great Gobbler Gallop was run at King Turkey Days in Worthington Minnesota. Ruby has a 30 second lead coming into heat 2 on October 12, at Turkeyfest. As the saying goes “It ain’t over till October.” The Ruby free pancake breakfast is slated for Saturday September 28 at 8:30 am. Pancakes will be served in the walkway in downtown Cuero, first come, first serve. This event will be a trial run for the main event in October, right before the parade on Saturday morning October 12. Same place, same time.

Recently I traveled to Branson, MO, with my wife and several of our friends. We attended the Hughes Brothers Christmas Show and was very entertained and enlightened with their performance. It was a family atmosphere and all their children participated in the program.

Texans’ right to free speech is under attack…again
Americans’ right to speak their minds is considered sacred, which is why we must fight to protect the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Citizens Participation Act. Both measures were carefully written with protection of the individual — the “little guy” — in mind. They’re designed to give a David a fighting chance if he finds himself in a legal duel with a Goliath.

Thank you for successful Women in Business event

It was a truly inspiring event, made possible by the support of many individuals and businesses within our community. With over 120 local female leaders attending, it was a hit and we are already planning for the 2025 luncheon!

CISD Gifted/Talented nominations open until Oct. 31
Cuero ISD will begin the screening process to identify students for the Gifted/Talented (GT) Program. Cuero ISD serves GT students in a pullout program for K-5 students and in Honors, AP, and dual credit classes at the secondary campuses. If you think your child fits many of the characteristics of gifted students listed below, you may nominate your child for screening.

Cuero VFW sponsors Scholarship Competitions
Students and Parents: It is never too early for your industrious student to begin planning for a college career, so the Cuero Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3972 & Auxiliary are sponsoring two opportunities for Cuero-area youth to start earning scholarship money for their future. The first is Patriot’s Pen, an essay contest for students in grades 6-8; the second is the Voice of Democracy, a recorded essay contest for students in grades 9-12 of high school. The Cuero VFW and Auxiliary will award a combined $1,170 to local winners in these competitions; the first-place winners advance to District competition, then State, and then National.

3rd Gospel Fest bringing joyful, clean fun to stage
The Tri-City Empowerment Council’s 3rd Annual Gospel Fest is happening Saturday, October 12, at the Friar Ag Center here in Cuero. Joining us from Austin is Singer, Actress and Comedian Hazel Marie who was born and raised right here in the Golden Crescent area. Bringing her love for the arts to the stage, Hazel goes the extra mile to bring all she can to any production with God leading the way.

CISD 7th grader nominated for national innovator challenge
Brennah Rodriguez, Cuero Jr. High 7th grade student, was nominated to enter the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC) national middle school science competition in recognition of her outstanding performance after competing in the Alamo Regional Science & Engineering Fair in San Antonio in February. She submitted her JIC project application recently this summer.

Constable-elect steps up for Precinct 1 duties
DeWitt County Precinct 1 Constable Kelly Phelps’ term of office ends on December 31, but his service to the county has all but ended due to injury. “Constable Phelps called saying he was unable to perform his duties due to injury,” County Sheriff Carl Bowen said.
