Hello Cuero, It's Sunday, January 19, 4:51 p.m., and I just got off a Zoom call with city, county, first responders and school district officials. The topic of discussion was the impending winter weather. It's coming and we are preparing for any emergencies which may occur. I am so proud of all our leadership who come together during the year and especially during times of crisis.

Kitty Kats, Wildcats sweep Pettus in district action
The Yorktown Kitty Kat and Wildcat Varsity Basketball teams secured decisive victories over the Pettus Lady Eagles and Eagles on Friday night, January 10, in District 31-2A action. Both teams battled through early challenges but came out on top with dominant second halves.

Kitty Kats and Wildcats Secure thrilling district wins
The Yorktown Kitty Kat and Wildcat varsity basketball teams picked up wins last Tuesday in District 312A action. On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, Yorktown traveled to Skidmore-Tynan to take on the Lady Cats and Bobcats.

Gobblers down Rockets
Friday night, the atmosphere inside the gym was electric as the Cuero Gobblers faced off against the San Antonio Kennedy Rockets to kick off district play. From the tip-off, it was clear that both teams were ready to battle. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Gobblers able to establish a 7-point lead. Junior Walker Dietze and Sophomore Dae Dae Bonner played a significant factor, ending the night with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 12 points, 5 rebounds respectively.

Seeing Double-Double: Lady Gobblers dominate in district matches
It was a big night for the Cuero Lady Gobblers and an even bigger night for Arissa Carbonara and Aubrey Bowles, who both had a double-double, as the Lady Gobblers handed the Lady Apaches their 15th loss of the season with a score of 60-35 on Tuesday, January 7.

Metting, Rau lead Wildcat All-District selections
District 15-2A, Division II champion Shiner was defeated December 18, 2024, in the Class 2A, Division II State Championship Game, 36-29, by Muenster. The District 152A, Division II All-District team can now be released. The Yorktown Wildcats were represented very well after posting a 7-4 record on the season and finishing in 3rd place in the district. Here are the Wildcat All-District selections: First Team All-District: Junior Brody Metting was named 1st Team All-District Quarterback. Metting had an amazing season: rushing for 1444 yards, more than any other quarterback in school history and rushed for 25 touchdowns. He also threw for over 500 yards and four touchdowns. Metting went through an incredible stretch early in the season when he rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns against Banquete, then the very next week rushed for 268 yards and six touchdowns against Skidmore-Tynan.

Kitty Kats pick up wins at Louise tournament
The Yorktown Kitty Kat Varsity basketball team competed December 27-28 in the Lady Hornet Holiday Classic in Louise, picking up a couple of victories. On day one, Yorktown faced two Class 4A schools. In game one, the Kitty Kats faced off against the Needville Lady Jays. Showing only a little rust from the holiday break, Yorktown jumped out to a 31-6 halftime lead, on its way to a 53-19 win.

Kitty Kats, Wildcats drop back-to-back district games
Over the holidays, the Yorktown Kitty Kat and Wildcat basketball teams played a couple of District 312A games and were unable to come away with any wins. On Monday, December 30, Yorktown traveled to Refugio to take on the Lady Cats and Wildcats.

Angelina County 23 pointer likely to be one Texas’ top bucks of the 2024-25 season
Justin Wigley of Huntington has shot some really nice bucks over the years, but none to compare to the bruiser of a whitetail that came calling on the afternoon of Nov. 3. It was the bewitching hour — roughly 20 minutes before sunset. The buck stepped out in an opening in the company of four does about 80 yards of Wigley’s box blind situated deep in the heart of his 1,200-acre lease in Angelina County.

Kubesch named to Elite Academic All-State Team
Gobbler senior Conner Kubesch earned the distinguished rank of Elite Team in this year’s Texas High School Coaches Association’s academic all-state football team. Several of his teammates were named to the 1st and 2nd team as well. The team recognizes senior athletes, trainers and managers who excel in GPA (grades 9-12), class rank and ACT/SAT score. The Elite Team requires a near perfect score in all categories.

Kitty Kats defeat Leopards to stay perfect in district
On December 17, the Yorktown Kitty Kat Varsity basketball team traveled to Kenedy to take on the Leopards in their third game of District 31-2A action. Yorktown scored the first seven points of the game and led, 7-4, at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Kitty Kats outscored the Leopards, 15-8, to take a ten point lead at halftime, 22-12. In the second half, the tempo of both teams picked up dramatically, as did the excitement of the game. In the third period, Yorktown extended its lead to 37-22. However, in the fourth period, the Leopards tried to make a game of it, but every time they would make a little run, the Kitty Kats would answer. Both teams scored 15 points in the quarter for the 52-37 final. Freshman Palyn Koopmann led Yorktown with 22 points and senior Nina Villarreal had 11 points, while both had seven rebounds. Sophomore Gracie Stehling had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Senior Sydnie Krueger and sophomore Kendall Seivers both pulled down six rebounds.

Wildcats pick up wins at new Winter Classic
The Yorktown Wildcat Varsity basketball hosted the 1st Annual Wildcat Winter Clas-sic from December 12-14, picking up two victories along the way. The three-day, ten-team tournament featured two pools.

Kitty Kats open District 2-0
The Yorktown Kitty Kats Varsity Basketball team opened up District 31-2A action this past week with two solid victories. On Tuesday, December 10, Yorktown traveled to Woodsboro to take on the Lady Eagles.The Kitty Kats jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before Woodsboro cut the lead to 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Yorktown outscored the Lady Eagles, 12-7, to take a 24-16 halftime lead. In the second half, the Kitty Kats scored 24 points to 16 for Woodboro, as Yorktown came away with the 48-32 win. Freshman Palyn Koopmann led the Kitty Kats with 11 points and four assists. Senior Laynie Boyd added eight points, while sophomore Gracie Stehling had eight points to go along with 13 rebounds. Senior Sydnie Krueger pulled down nine rebounds and scored seven points.

Kitty Kats improve to 9-5
The Yorktown Kitty Kat Varsity basketball team played five games this past week, winning two. On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the Kitty Kats traveled to Tilden to take on the McMullen County Cowgirls, ranked #17 in the TABC Class A polls. Yorktown jumped out to an early lead, but the Cowgirls bounced back to take a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter before extending their lead to 3325 at halftime. In the second half, the Kitty Kats were able to cut the lead to 35-34, but that was as close as they got, as McMullen County showed why they are ranked and pulled away for a 53-42 win. Senior Nina Villarreal and freshman Palyn Koopmann led the Kitty Kats with 10 points each. Koopmann had her first career double-double, as she also pulled down 10 rebounds. Seniors Laynie Boyd and Sydnie Krueger had six rebounds apiece. The JV Kitty Kats defeated McMullen County’s JV, 24-14, for another win.

Kitty Kats come out on top in new YISD tourney
Just before Thanksgiving, November 21 - 23, Yorktown ISD hosted the 1st Annual Kitty Kat Classic girls basketball tournament. The tenteam tournament featured two pools. Pool A was Yorktown, St. Joseph (Victoria), Nordheim, Louise, and Banquete’s JV, who replaced a team that dropped out late. Pool B was Runge, Nixon-Smiley, Natalia, Industrial and Banquete. Each team played two games on Thursday and two games on Friday, and then were paired with the corresponding placed team from the other pool on Saturday.
