Christmas gifts of pets not nice, but certificates perfect presents
Pet shelters and adoption agencies across the country are unanimously in agreement that no cat, dog, puppy or kitten should be given to a family as a holiday 'surprise' gift. Often loving grandparents, aunts, uncles or family friends think it would be so sweet to 'gift' children with a fur baby.

Ranching museum receives LCRA grant
The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum soon will renovate the exteriors of the historic Trautwein and Cook & Day Motor Co. buildings in downtown Cuero, an important step as the museum works to expand its space into the two adjacent structures, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of Cuero.

Hello All, Busy week coming up this week: regular City Council meeting tonight (12/9) and the Stevenson Unit begins Day #1 of an American Correctional Association (ACA) accreditation audit. Tuesday (12/10) will see meeting #3 of the Mayor’s Youth Council and a get together event for Key City officials and the Auditors conducting the Stevenson Unit ACA accreditation audit. On Wednesday (12/11) I will be delivering welcome remarks to Cuero for attendees of a Foster Parent event at the Chisholm Trail Heritage museum. On Thursday evening (12/12) the City of Cuero Christmas and appreciation event will take place, and of course on Friday and Saturday, (12/13-14) Christmas Downtown will be in full swing. Please visit YOUR downtown businesses or just come out and enjoy a little time out of the house.

Gary “Butch” Caraway
Gary “Butch” Caraway, 67, of Cuero passed away in his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. He was born May 11, 1957 in Cuero to Stayton and Julia Lee Caraway. He married Anna June Eakin on August 7, 1976. He enjoyed doing small engine repairs, welding, fishing and cooking for his family. He loved his Diamond K work family but loved his wife the most.

Mary Katheryn Stauffer
Mary Katheryn Stauffer, 88, of Rockport peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. She was born April 30, 1936 in Shiner to Charles and Mary Stary Jiral. She married Kurt Werner Stauffer in San Antonio in 1980. She was a dedicated LVN and while her children were growing up, she worked with many local youth organizations. Mary began painting in 1978 and she enjoyed painting many types of art mediums. While in Switzerland from 1981-1995, she continued to expand her love of art by quilting, needle pointing and sculpting dolls. In 1995, she returned to live in the states settling in Rockport where she continued needle pointing and sewing but also began to take art classes from her neighbor Joyce Clarkson. Some of her artwork can be viewed at the Cuero Pecan House. She retired in Rockport and enjoyed her Lee Circle and Tuscany Village friends.

First Fall Fest
Children, teens and families enjoyed the first Yorktown Fall Festival on Sunday, November 24, at the City Park. Buck stops at Sheriff’s door for no-show charge
DeWitt County Commissioners heard from Sheriff Carl Bowen at their meeting on November 25 about a hotel charge incurred by a former employee who did not attend training. Bowen had previously asked the county to pay the $171. 35, but withdrew that request.

Clean Sweep: Council moves forward with cleanup of buildings, junk cars, rv, and commercial vehicles
The Yorktown City Council discussed the cleanup of two properties with landowners who attended the November 25 regular meeting. Eight property owners were notified that the city needs to hear from them on plans to repair or demolish their structures, in accordance with city ordinance.

Kitty Kats come out on top in new YISD tourney
Just before Thanksgiving, November 21 - 23, Yorktown ISD hosted the 1st Annual Kitty Kat Classic girls basketball tournament. The tenteam tournament featured two pools. Pool A was Yorktown, St. Joseph (Victoria), Nordheim, Louise, and Banquete’s JV, who replaced a team that dropped out late. Pool B was Runge, Nixon-Smiley, Natalia, Industrial and Banquete. Each team played two games on Thursday and two games on Friday, and then were paired with the corresponding placed team from the other pool on Saturday.

62nd Annual DeWitt County Pecan Show Results
The 62nd Annual DeWitt County Pecan Show was held on Tuesday, November 26, at the Friar Ag Center in Cuero. There were 42 total entries coming from four counties (DeWitt – 10 entries, Victoria – 16 entries, Lavaca – 14, Fayette – 2), with 29 of these entries advancing to the Regional Show. The East Texas Regional Pecan Show will be held in College Station, TX on February 3-4, 2025. The Annual Pecan Show is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of DeWitt County and the Pecan Show Committee. Committee members and Extension Agents working the Show this year were: Anthony Netardus, Denise Goebel, Jennifer Netardus, Kernell Moritz, Bill Braden, Mark Vavrusa, Andrew Kutac, Nola Bohuslav, and Joe Janak. The judges for the 2024 Pecan Show were Scott Willey, Fayette County Ag Extension Agent and Paul Hajovsky, Fayette County pecan grower. The Grand Champions in each of the three pecan divisions received a $25 cash award. Special thanks to the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture; De-Witt M&J – Mark Vavrusa; and Cuero Pecan House – Annette, Erwin and Anthony Rath, for sponsoring the plaques, rosettes, ribbons, and cash prizes. The results of this year’s show are as follows:
