RWOYA March speakers: Lavaca County law enforcement
The Republican Women of the Yoakum Area (RWOYA) announced their keynote speakers for their next meeting/ luncheon, on Wednesday, March 12, as Lavaca County Sheriff Steven Greenwell and Lavaca County Attorney James Reeves. The speakers will share information on the status of law enforcement and the justice system situation in Lavaca County.

Yorktown celebrated its inaugural Mardi Gras
On March 1, Yorktown came alive with vibrant colors and lively celebrations as it hosted its inaugural Mardi Gras, hosted by Dwayne and Susan Belaire of D’zo Mercantile. The festivities kicked off with an exhilarating Mardi Gras ATV Parade at 10 a.m., where splendidly decorated vehicles paraded through the streets, _lling the air with excitement and anticipation.

Track season takes off
The Cuero Gobblers took to the track on February 27 in Goliad participating in the Shirley Fmka Relays. The Varsity Boys _nished in 9th place overall, and the JV Boys brought home the silver, _nishing 2nd, just 5 points shy of Ingleside who topped the list. Sophomore Jessiah Rodriguez jumped a personal best, for the JV Boys team, of 5’9” in the high jump. Coach Adam DuBose noted “after _ghting the rain and cold the last few weeks we were happy to _nally get out on the track. I am extremely excited about the way our guys competed in every event they were in.”

CHS golfers tee it high and let it fly
The Yoakum Tom Tom Golf Tournament proved to be an exciting event showcasing talent from some of our local towns. With four schools participating and more than 30 golfers, there were some incredible performances from both the Lady Gobblers and Gobblers, who took to the course on February 26.

DeWitt investigator picked for FBI training
Ele Chew, reporter DeWitt County Sheriff Carl Bowen announced at the Commissioner’s Court that Lieutenant Investigator Bethany Hobbs has been accepted into a prestigious, 10-week course at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, running from March 24 to June 5. This program is considered one of the premier law enforcement training courses in the world, and participation is by invitation only, with a class size of 265 members, including international students.

Enrique “Henry” L. Amador
Enrique “Henry” L. Amador 64 of Yorktown died Friday February 21, 2025, in Yorktown. He was born July 15, 1960, in Yorktown to the late Raul and Tomasita Abrigo Amador. Henry spent 42 years with the City of Yorktown advancing to becoming Water and Street Superintendent, retiring from service in 2023. He was a wealth of knowledge of the infrastructure of the City of Yorktown. In his earlier years he enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball. Also enjoyed going fishing with his longtime childhood friend Joe Dee Cornish III.

Quinton Metting, 77, of Yorktown passed away Sunday, February 23, 2025. He was born June 2, 1947 in Yorktown to Wilton and Willis Spies Metting. He graduated from Yorktown High School and is a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Yorktown.

Voucher bill has backing of House majority
A slim majority of Texas House members have indicated they will back House Bill 3, which creates education savings accounts that allow families to use taxpayer money for private school education. The Dallas Morning News reported that 75 Republican legislators have signed on with the bill’s author, state Rep. Brad Buckley, R-Salado, to support the measure.
