KYB celebrates park bench installation
At the “Keep Yorktown Beautiful” (KYB) meeting on February 4 at the First Presbyterian Church, Secretary Patti Harbers announced that a total of 13 park benches had been successfully installed. The seven members present nodded in approval and relief as Harbers shared the recent history of these benches.

Kitty Kats punch ticket to playoffs
After a one-year absence, the Yorktown Kitty Kats are back in the playoffs, clinching a berth with a thrilling 52-43 victory over the Kenedy Leopards in a fourth-place tiebreaker last Friday night. Yorktown and Kenedy entered the final week of District 312A play deadlocked at 8-6, setting up a mustwin showdown.

Livestock judging team wins nationals, headed to Scotland
The DeWitt County 4-H Livestock Judging Team will proudly represent DeWitt County, the state of Texas, and the United States at the international Royal Highland Show (RHS) in Edinburgh, Scotland, this June. Founded in 1822, the Royal Highland Show is celebrated as the largest showcase of Scottish agriculture.

Both the Lady Pirates and the Pirates will finish district play in 2nd place, advancing to the play-offs. The Lady Pirates had a season record of 8-2, only falling to Moulton.

Voucher bill passes Senate, arrives in House
A bill to implement school vouchers in Texas sailed through the Senate largely on party lines last week and now awaits consideration in the House, the Austin American-Statesman reported. House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, said he believes there are enough votes in that chamber to pass the legislation, which was defeated a half-dozen times in 2023 by a coalition of Democratic and rural Republican members.

Clinton Thieme
Clinton Thieme, 44, of Nordheim passed away on Friday January 31, 2025. He was surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Cuero to Ray and Wanda Rogge Thieme on May 6, 1980. Clinton was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and working on cars and motors of things that people needed fixed. He always liked working on the farm and water wells, and worked the oil field with his dad. He liked motorcycles and the company of his friends. Clinton was good at making people laugh and smile.

Harlin Royce Gruetzmacher
Harlin Royce Gruetzmacher of Katy, Texas passed away on January 29, 2025. He was born in Yorktown, TX on June 19, 1933. Harlin grew-up and lived throughout life; birth through high school graduation; Yorktown, TX U.S. Army; Fort Bliss, TX and Japan Post Army years working for Texaco; Colorado, California, Texas Retirement years: Liverpool, TX and finally Katy, TX. He was married to Carlyn A. Voelkel on June 14, 1953 in Yorktown, TX. Harlin attended Yorktown high school, graduated in 1950 and later served in the U.S. Army, 1953-1955. His hobbies included antiques, restoring furniture, restoring and repairing antique clocks, vegetable gardening, and reading. Harlin was known for his loyalty, tenacity, curiosity, resourcefulness, Christian example, patriotic, no nonsense, and hard working.

Bernice Pilsner, 87, of Nordheim passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025. She was born December 12, 1937 in Sweet Home to Herbert and Annie Kremling Laake. Bernice loved to be outside with all her flowers. Flowers brought peace and enjoyment. Bernice also liked to play bingo and enjoyed her trips to Coushatta.
